Materials Need for the Plush Love Bot Sewing Pattern
Here are some recommended materials and tools needed to complete the Love Bot sewing pattern.
Fabric
All Scratch and Stitch plush sewing patterns are written for fleece fabric, however they can all be made in other types of fabric. The Love Bot is no exception as it has been made in fleece fabric, quilting cotton, upcycled clothing, and denim fabric.
Plush Toy Filling
My favorite filling for my plush toy sewing patterns is by-far Poly-fil by Fairfield World. It’s soft, plush filling makes the perfect filling for plush toys, is machine washable, and stays plump.
My second favorite option for filling plush toys is cutting up fabric scraps into micro pieces. This sustainable option is a great way to use up that ever-lasting bin of fabric scraps. Tiny fabric scraps as filling for plush toys creates a more dense and heavier filling for plush toys. This is an especially great option for those plush toys that need a more stiff stuffing.
Needle and Thread
I always recommend using the correct needle and thread for the chosen fabric type. The needle type should match the fabric type while the size should match the chosen thread weight. While I’m not strict about what type of thread I use and will sometimes use thread that’s readily available or already in my machine, the best practice is the use the correct thread for your fabric. If sewing the plush robot with fleece fabric, chose a standard all-purpose polyester or cotton thread. If making the Love Bot in a heavier weight fabric, you can stick with a standard weight thread or bump up the weight a bit.
When choosing which needle to sew plush toys with, always match your needle fabric type and thread weight. A universal needle is an easy choice for sewing fleece and cotton while a denim needle should be used with denim fabric. When I make my easy plush sewing patterns using upcycled denim fabric and since denim frays easily, I like to sew one stitch line with a standard 35 weight thread for a good and sturdy hold and then sew any exposed topstitching with a heavier weight thread as a decorative element.

Always make sure to check your sewing machine manual to ensure you are using the right type of needle for your machine!
Here are some of my most-used needles and thread with links to purchase:
- Schmetz Sewing Machine Needles – You can’t go wrong!
- Assorted Sewing Machine Needles by Organ – Great needles at reasonable pricing.
- Singer Sewing Needles – Another reputable brand of sewing machine needles.
- Janome Purple Tip Sewing Needles – Love these needles for projects with heavier weight fabrics and thick seams.

Tips for Sewing and Customizing the Love Bot
While the Love Bot is uniquely characteristic straight from the pattern, you can make the Love Bot your own unique creation by trying some of these ideas.
- Use contrasting thread colors for the topstitching to really make the stitches stand out.
- Vary thread weights and stitch length for a unique look.
- Use decorative stitches to add even more difference and character to your sewing project.
- Customize the heart with a name, initials, or a design.
- Use embroidery thread to add stitched details around the heart or other areas of the robot.
- Try making the Love Bot in denim! The various details of a pair of jeans can make the different parts of the robot have a one-of-a-kind look. Use the buttons, rivets, and pockets from a pair of jeans as design details in the robot.
- Try minky fabric for an extra cuddly cuddle buddy.
- Bust out the scrap bin and mix-and-match different scraps in to a patchwork style robot.
- Reduce the size of the Love Bot sewing pattern to make a handheld size robot.
- I have yet to see a sparkly Love Bot. Give a shot at a robot covered in glittery sequins.
