I’m a big fan of making bags (if you didn’t already know)—especially ones that keep everything organized in its place. Whether I’m packing for a trip or just trying to stay organized at home, I want a bag that folds up neatly, holds all the essentials, and looks good doing it.
That’s why I designed the Tri-Fold Toiletry Bag sewing pattern. It’s compact, functional, folds up nicely, and can be made in a weekend—or less.
Whether you’re sewing for yourself or making gifts, this travel bag is about to become your new favorite project.

Meet the Tri-Fold Toiletry Bag
The bag folds into thirds and secures with a snap—keeping your gear neatly packed and easy to access. It opens up flat so you can see everything at once in the clear pockets. The slim, tri-fold shape makes it perfect for slipping into carry-on luggage, backpack, or gym bag.
This beginner-friendly sewing pattern offers enough opportunity to customize, show off some quilt lines, or upgrade and experiment with style.
Smart Features That Just Make Sense
Here’s what sets the Tri-Fold Toiletry Bag apart:
- Three roomy compartments – Organize by category or user.
- Zippered pockets – Keep items secure while in transit.
- Clear and mesh pockets – Instantly see what’s inside each section.
- Compact folding design – Packs flat but stands upright when full.
- Carrying handle – Easy to grab and go (perfect for camp showers!).
- Hanging loop – Ideal for hotels, dorms, and RVs.
- Custom closure options – Add a snap, Velcro, or magnetic button.
- Unisex style – Looks great in denim, florals, neutrals, or canvas.
- Multi-purpose – Also perfect for craft supplies, tech gear, or first aid kits.

Made to Be Customized
One of my favorite things about this pattern is how easy it is to personalize.
I’ve seen it made with upcycled denim, quilted cotton, waterproof canvas—even vinyl with appliqué for a totally custom look. Check out how I made it with Schitt’s Creek fabric! Want to make it even more special? Add a monogram, embroidered name, or patch for the perfect gift.

Sewing Tips for a Successful Sewing Project
A few of my go-to tips for this pattern:
- Use medium-weight interfacing for a structured but foldable finish.
- Using a lighter-weight material? Use a foam stabilizer to give it structure while still being able to fold up.
- Water-resistant fabrics like PUL, waterproof canvas, or oilcloth make it perfect for bathrooms or beach bags.
- Try quilting your outer panel before assembling to add texture and design.
- Want extra flair? Add piping or custom labels before assembly.
- Working with vinyl? Use a Teflon foot or tissue paper for smooth stitching.

“Great pattern. Super easy to follow.” —via Etsy review

“This is a fantastic pattern. Initially I was torn between this pattern and some videos online. I realized this pattern actually leave gaps between the pockets for easier folding which many other videos do not offer. It is a very well thought out design. I cannot recommend this pattern/shop enough. Her videos are extremely well organized with each section separated for easy viewing and she guides you every step of the way. It’s also not on YouTube so no commercials! This is well worth the money. Cathi is amazing and ready to help/ answer any questions. I had no trouble following and I would consider myself beginner to intermediate in experience. I already used it for a trip and it held up really well! If you find yourself wondering if you should get this pattern, just do it! You’ll be very happy you did.” —via Etsy review
