Some pieces of clothing hold more than fabric, seams, and hardware. They hold memories. They carry a person’s style, their personality, and the everyday details that made them feel like themselves. That’s exactly what this leather biker vest memory bag does.
Sometimes it is the shirt someone wore to every special event, the denim jeans they wore while working in the garage, or the leather vest they always wore while riding their motorcycle. Then when someone leaves us, they often leave behind more than photos and stories. They leave behind the things they wore, used, and loved. Turning those pieces into something that can be carried, held, or used again is one of the most meaningful kinds of sewing I get to do.
This custom memory bag started with a message from a woman who had found my leather jacket to memory bag project online. She had been holding onto her late father’s leather biker vest since his passing in 2020. It had been sitting in her closet, waiting for the right idea and the right time.
She knew she wanted it turned into something someday. A purse. A bag. Something useful. Something she could carry instead of keeping it tucked away.
This one-of-a-kind leather memory bag was made from that vest.
A Leather Vest Covered in Memories
When his daughter first reached out, she shared that the vest was the one item she had asked for after losing her dad. It was meaningful because it felt like him.
He loved bikes. He loved going for rides. The vest was part of the way she remembered him.
She did not come into the project with a specific bag design in mind, but she knew she liked crossbody bags. She wanted something practical enough to use, but still had the character of the original vest that reminded her of her father.
That became the goal for this project: turn her father’s leather biker vest into a custom memory bag that still felt like the vest.
Not a brand new bag made from old leather.
A bag that still carried the details, texture, and personality of the original piece.
Choosing the Details to Preserve
One of the most important parts of a memory sewing project is deciding which details to keep. A full plan is mandatory before any cutting begins.
When working with a sentimental garment, the goal is usually not to use every single piece. The goal is to preserve the details that matter most and create something that feels connected to the original item while also being functional and long-lasting.
For this leather biker vest memory bag, the original buffalo nickel snaps were an important detail to include. The leather braiding and pockets also had a lot of character, and the side grommets with laced cord instantly felt like part of the biker vest story.
Those were the details I knew were worth saving.
The original vest also had patches, but we chose not to include those in the final bag design. They were removed and preserved. Some of the areas under the patches were unusable in the final bag.
She also sent a button-up shirt that belonged to her dad, which became the lining for the bag. There was enough fabric in the sleeves alone to line the bag, add a slip pocket, and a zipper pocket. The rest of shirt could still be worn as is.
For this project, the details carried into the finished memory bag included:
- The original buffalo nickel snaps (and are fully functional on the flap of the bag)
- The braided leather from the vest pockets (and were turned into a single, phone-sized pocket under the flap)
- The braiding detail from the back of the vest became the back of the bag
- Extra braiding details became accents on the strap.
- The side grommets and laced cord (kept in their original location on the sides)
- Her dad’s button-up shirt for the lining and interior pockets
Working With a One-of-a-Kind Material
Sewing with an existing leather garment is very different from cutting into new fabric.
A vest already has seams, curves, worn areas, hardware, lining, pockets, snaps, and holes from the original construction. Those details are what make the piece special, but they also determine what is possible. Different areas of leather garments vary in the thickness of the leather and those things need to be considered when reconstructing a piece into something new.
This leather vest had seen many sunny days and smoky biker bars. Before cutting into it, I cleaned and conditioned the leather, removed the patches, and took out the original lining.
The leather itself was in good condition and gave me enough room to work with the shape of the vest while still preserving some of the original details.
With projects like this, the marks and wear are not something to hide. They are part of the story.
Designing a Custom Crossbody Bag From a Leather Vest
This bag was made using one of my own original, unreleased (and modified) bag sewing patterns. Because this was a commission made from a sentimental garment, the finished bag is completely one-of-a-kind.
The bag sewing pattern gave the project a starting shape and structure, but the final design was built around the vest itself.
For this bag, I wanted to create something that could be worn comfortably as a crossbody, had a secure closure, and still held onto the character of the original biker vest.
The front of the bag features a flap that closes with the original buffalo nickel snaps from the vest. Under the flap is a slip pocket big enough to hold a phone. The braided leather details from the vest were also worked into the front and strap of the bag.
The back of the bag uses a leather panel from the back of the vest. The side grommets and laced cord were incorporated into the finished shape, bringing one of the most recognizable vest details into the new design.
A leather-and-chain strap was added so the bag could be worn crossbody and adjusted as needed.
Inside, the bag is fully lined and has both a slip pocket and a zipper pocket, all made from her dad’s button-up shirt sleeves.
The Finished Leather Vest Memory Bag
The finished bag is a medium-sized crossbody bag with plenty of room to carry the essentials, while still keeping the look and feeling of the original leather vest.
The buffalo nickel snaps on the front flap give the bag a strong focal point and function as the bag’s flap closure. The chevron-style braided leather strips add movement and texture. The metal grommets and side lacing bring in that unmistakable biker vest detail.
Inside, the shirt lining adds another personal layer to the finished piece. Pockets inside give places to organize things carried.
It is sturdy, wearable, and personal. Most importantly, it is no longer hanging in a closet and can be carried.
A Bag Made to Keep Dad Close
When the finished bag arrived, I received a message that said it was both “so cool” and emotional.
Later, she shared the bag on her dad’s heavenly birthday and wrote that she had found someone to help turn his biker vest into a purse so she could keep a part of him a little closer.
That is exactly why I am honored to create memory pieces like this.
A memory bag does not replace the person or replace the grief. But it can give new life to something meaningful that might otherwise stay tucked away. It turns a garment into something that can be used, carried, and loved in a new way.
Why Memory Makes Matter
Sentimental clothing can be hard to know what to do with.
Getting rid of someone’s things may not feel right, but letting them sit in a closet does not always feel right either. Some things are too meaningful to donate, too personal to alter without a plan, and too special to keep packed away forever.
Custom memory makes give those pieces another purpose.
A memory project can be made from all kinds of meaningful textiles, including leather jackets, biker vests, denim jeans, ties, button-up shirts, flannels, boots, T-shirts, children’s clothing, workwear, uniforms, and other garments tied to a person, place, or season of life.
Some memory makes become plush animals, pillows, hats, and bags.
This one became a leather crossbody bag made from a father’s biker vest. And now it can be carried close.
