When people search for a memory stuffed animal from clothing, they usually picture a teddy bear made from a button-down shirt. And those are beautiful.
But sometimes… a teddy bear just isn’t the vibe.
Sometimes the person being remembered lived in blue jeans with worn knees and oil stains, faded pockets, and zippers that stuck just a little. Their signature look included well-worn t-shirts and denim that carried years of everyday life. Turning those clothes into a stuffed animal made from dad’s clothes doesn’t always mean soft plaid and bows. Sometimes it means honoring the texture, weight, and structure of the fabric itself.
For this project, I created five custom Memory Love Bots — a unique take on a memorial stuffed animal — made primarily from well-loved jeans and Harley t-shirts. Each one is a keepsake from clothing that tells a story through seams, hardware, and carefully preserved wear.
These were created for a family in memory of their beloved father and grandfather — a man remembered for his well-worn jeans, garage-tinkering, and unmistakable style.
Stuffed Animal Made from a Loved One’s Clothes Using Denim

Using Jeans to Create a Memory Stuffed Animal from Clothing
Memory stuffed animals made from clothing can be created from shirts, flannels, uniforms, or denim jeans. For this project, denim was the natural choice — sturdy, textured, and full of visible life. These Love Bots were made primarily from multiple pairs of denim jeans, with parts of Harley Davidson t-shirts woven in as accents.
Denim parts used in upcycled jeans projects:
- Real pockets (front, back, and fifth pockets too!)
- Zippers (working zippers can create new pockets, broken zippers create style)
- Hardware details (buttons and button holes, snaps, rivets, and even bedazzling)
- Belt loops and waistbands (These are some of my favorite pieces to pull from jeans and put into my upcycled denim projects.)
- Frayed seams (whether authentic or built-in, frayed seams are iconic in denim jeans upcycled projcts)
- Intentional distressing (while I prefer natural distressing the most, many denim jeans comes with intentional distressing)
- Visible stitching (these are some of the best details to highlight in denim stuffed animals)
- Tags and Labels (implementing tags and labels into the design of memory stuffed animals can amplify the look and style of a project )

Making a Memory Love Bot Using Upcycled Denim Jeans and T-Shirts
The request was clear: highlight the denim. Feature the stains. Don’t hide the wear and tear. “Because that was dad.”
In a lot of sewing projects, imperfections are avoided. In memory sewing, some people request that the imperfections be highlighted.
Denim is especially powerful for a memorial sewing project because it carries structure. It holds shape. It softens over time but stays strong. The whiskering, the fade lines, the frayed hems — they tell a story without saying a word.
And yes, some of the t-shirt elements are subtle. A tag here. A strip of t-shirt fabric there. Enough to nod to it, without overpowering the denim foundation.

Five Memory Love Bots, Five Personalities
All five were created from the same Love Bot Plush sewing pattern. Same base structure, same size, and same foundational design. They all turned out unique, and that’s the fun of creating with repurposed materials.
One Love Bot features high-contrast blue and black denim pieces. Another leans into deep black denim with subtle gold and color highlights. One proudly displays a full pocket front and center. Another shows off more zipper and seam detailing. Some have heavier fray, others cleaner lines.
Each one naturally developed its own personality simply based on where the fabric landed and how the materials wanted to be used. They don’t look delicate. They look sturdy. and solid. Like they’ve built something. And that was exactly the point.

Meet the Five
Every memory project carries its own energy. And once these were assembled and lined up together, it was impossible not to notice that each one had a personality of its own.
Here’s the lineup.

1. The Classic
Light wash denim with plenty of details. The front pocket with fifth pocket intact are displayed front and center. Features lots of seams and belt loops througout.
This one feels like the everyday version. The dependable one. The one that probably knew exactly where every tool was in the garage.
The pocket placement became a focal point, and the lighter wash highlights every seam and stitch detail beautifully.

2. The Bold Contrast
This Love Bot leans into strong into contrasting color panels and white frayed threads, giving it a bit more visual edge.
The mix of colors creates movement and depth, especially the “HARLEY DAVIDSON” that’s displayed down the legs. It’s the one that looks like it might’ve raced something at some point.
I can’t decide if the lettered legs or the zippered arm is my favorite part.

3. The Patchwork Character
With more visible piecing and shirt accents, this one has that the “built from scraps” vibe.
There’s something about the way the denim sections come together here that feels inventive — like making something out of whatever was around, just to see if it could be done. He’s even got a secret behind that zipper pocket in front.
Some creative piecing and placement when into this guy!

4. The Dark Horse
Solid black denim and a strong presence. Lot’s of extra fraying and distressing details, and a big pocket on the front with a brass zipper.
This one feels grounded and steady. The darker tones give it a little more weight visually, and the hardware and t-shirt details pop in a subtle way.
Extra details that were inside the seams are now shown on the outside.

5. The Balanced One
A thoughtful blend of denim tones highlighting the deeper blues that get hidden in the seams, with just a t-shirt tag to hint at the story without overpowering it. The subtle contrast in denim pieces gives it dimension without demanding attention.
This Love Bot has more clean lines and seams, but is still frayed around the edges.
Just a simple t-shirt tag is featured on the back of an arm like a tattoo.

Stuffed Animal Made from Dad’s Clothes Using Denim Featuring Stains and Tears on Purpose
Let’s talk about the part that makes some people pause. Stains, distressing, fades, worn areas…
Because when creating a stuffed animal made from dad’s clothes, the worn knee or faint oil mark isn’t a flaw. It’s a memory of him.
To ensure areas of heavy wear keep the plush stuffing inside, these were stabilized and reinforced from the inside so they remain structurally sound. Frayed edges were controlled so they continue to fray naturally without unraveling the entire piece.
The Love Bot pattern works beautifully for memory plush because it is pieced together allowing smaller sections of meaningful fabric to be intentionally highlighted. Seams and details become design features.

Subtle T-Shirt Details
The Harley t-shirts were used as accent materials rather than dominant panels. Some Love Bots include just a tag or a small highlight section. That balance keeps the denim as the hero while still honoring the full story of the memory.
It’s a reminder that sometimes the smallest detail — even just a label — can hold big meaning.

Why a Memory Stuffed Animal from Clothing Matters
Used textiles carries shape, weight, texture, and movement that all needs to be considered when creating a memory stuffed animal from upcycled clothing . When someone lived in denim, those jeans tell a story that’s hard to replicate with new fabric. Highlighting those worn details can help capture a memory even further.

Frequently Asked Questions About Memory Plush from Clothing
How many pairs of jeans are needed to make a memory stuffed animal?
Typically, one pair of adult jeans can produce two to three Love Bots, depending on size, condition, and usable fabric. For larger memorial stuffed animals or if you’d like more denim variation, additional pairs are recommended.
Can denim be used to make a memory stuffed animal?
Yes. Denim is an excellent material for a memory stuffed animal from clothing. It is durable, structured, and highlights natural wear patterns like fading, fraying, and whiskering. Heavier fabrics like denim may require stabilization and reinforced stitching for long-term durability.
Can stains and worn areas be included in a memorial stuffed animal?
Absolutely. Many families request that stains, distressing, and worn areas be preserved. In memory sewing projects, these marks often represent meaningful moments. Areas of heavy wear are stabilized from the inside to maintain structural integrity while keeping the visual character intact.
Can pockets, zippers, and hardware be used in a stuffed animal made from clothing?
Yes. Functional elements such as pockets, zippers, and hardware can be incorporated into a custom memory plush. These features add personality and authenticity, especially when working with denim or workwear.
Can t-shirts be incorporated into a memory plush made from jeans?
Yes. T-shirts can be used as accent panels, appliqué details, or tags. Because t-shirts are stretch fabrics, they require stabilization when paired with structured materials like denim to ensure longevity.
Are memory stuffed animals safe for children?
All of my plush sewing patterns follow general child safety practices during construction. However, handmade plush toys are not legally safety tested or certified. Clients assume responsibility for use with children or pets.
What types of clothing can be used for a memory keepsake stuffed animal?
Memory stuffed animals can be made from:
- Jeans
- Flannels
- T-shirts
- Uniforms
- Workwear
- Jackets
- Baby clothing
- Military garments
The structure and texture of the fabric help determine the final look and feel.
