- Size: Approximately 22″ H x 13″ W
- Fabric: This pattern is written for fleece fabric, however many fabrics will work great for Frog and Toad.
- Sewing Level: Beginner-friendly
- Sewing: Can be sewn by hand or machine
- Stuffing: Fill with fiber filling (ex: Poly-fil or similar) or use small fabric scraps.
What Type of Materials Are Best for the Frog and Toad Plushies?
Fabric:
- Both plush sewing patterns are written for fleece fabric.
- Many other fabrics will work for both the frog and toad sewing patterns, but may require a few extra considerations during construction.
- Upcycled textiles are worth considering for making Frog and Toad plushies: towels, denim, upholstery fabric, corduroy, and more.
Filling:
- My favorite fiber filling is Poly-fil by Fairfield World. It’s squishy and keeps its shape. It’s also hypoallergenic, washable, and contains no added chemicals.
- Another favorite way to stuff plush toys is using fabric scraps cut into tiny pieces. This not only helps empty your scrap bin, but also keeps those scraps out of the landfill.
Embroidery Thread:
- Hand stitching the eyes, nose, and mouth onto plush toy faces is one of the easiest ways to add personality. I recommend DMC embroidery thread. It’s low-cost, high quality, and makes stitching basic embroidery stitches much easier.
Tools Used in Making the Frog and Toad Plush Toys
- Sewing machine: While both plushies can be sewn by machine, by hand, or with a mix of both, a sewing machine with a straight stitch works perfectly.
- Thread: Use the right thread for your fabric.
- Hand-sewing needle (for closing openings): I always have a variety pack on hand.
- Fabric marking tool: A water-soluble or other disappearing ink fabric pen.
- Scissors or rotary cutter: Sharp fabric scissors and a rotary cutter make cutting fabric a breeze.
- Pins or clips: I use both glass-head quilting pins and sewing clips. Both have their place in my studio.
- Chopstick or turning tool (or the eraser end of a pencil): Use this to gently push out those toad toes.
