When my BFF said “Let’s do a color day for EDC!” I didn’t hesitate to agree. Everyone in our group would dress head-to-toe in one color. My color was purple (my favorite color) so I had to make some diy purple shoes to match the theme.
We would be dancing all night long for three nights so it was important to have comfy shoes. I already had these gray and purple Nike’s in my closet, they just needed to make them more purple.
A little masking tape and some fabric paint was all it took to make these colorful shoes. I am very impressed with the durability of this fabric paint as it adhered to both the fabric and pleather parts really well. After the weekend I was even able to throw my purple shoes in the washing machine and the paint still held up perfectly.
How to Paint Purple Shoes (or any color)
Whether you’re wanting to make purple shoes or another color, I highly recommend using Tulip’s fabric spray paint.
Materials
- shoes
- painter’s masking tape
- Tulip ColorShot Instant Fabric Color Spray
Start be cleaning your shoes. I put my shoes in garment bags and sent them through the delicate cycle in my washing machine. Let them dry thoroughly.
With the laces removed, mask out any part you do not want to be painted. Painter’s tape works great for this.
Protect your surface and paint the shoes. Give them a couple of coats with ample dry time in between coats.
Rock your new diy purple shoes (or whatever color you choose)!
Here we are at EDC on color day. We all had plastic visors to match our gear.
Have you made your own diy purple shoes? I’d love to see them. Leave a comment below and make sure to tag @scratchandstitch on Instagram with your diy creations.

Wow! Awesome! Greatest idea ever……love your style of shoes too. Thanks for showing how to use fabric paint for something unusual. At least it is to me.

Right?! It was kind of on a whim and I am so impressed that the fabric paint held up so well. Even after sending the shoes through the washing machine. :)
