I’m a huge fan of d-ring belts that use strapping. They stay flat without a bulge from a buckle, they’re adjustable to any size, and they’re easy to get on or off. I’m also a fan of pyramid studs (see this backpack refashion that uses over 250 studs). A lightbulb turned on when I came up with the idea to add studs to a d-ring belt.
These black distressed pyramid studs came from an old studded belt of my husband’s. I had carefully removed the studs and saved for later use. They are the same studs used in this studded clutch upcyle.
How to make a diy studded belt
It’s so easy to create your own diy studded belt that you’ll want to make multiple. I sure do! Complete one belt in under an hour with only four materials and a sewing machine.
Materials
- 1.5″ wide belt strapping (sometimes called belting or webbing)
- 2 Rectangle Rings or D-Rings
- metal studs
- basic sewing supplies
Cut a length of strapping to your desired length taking into consideration the amount that will fold over the rings (about 1 inch). 43″ works great for me.
Thread about 1 inch of the belting through the two rings and fold over. Pin or clip to hold in place. Stitch across the belting 1/8″ from the end with a straight stitch. Go over a couple times to make it really secure. Follow up with a zig-zag stitch to keep the end of the belt from fraying.
Stitch the opposite end of the belt with a zig-zag stitch several times to stop and fraying. Optionally you can melt the end of the belt with a lighter.
Add your studs to the belt. Push the prongs of the studs through the belt and fold them over with a flathead screwdriver. You can cover the entire belt with studs in a grid or create a pattern. I decided on a diagonal line pattern. Leave about 8″ at of the end of the belt without studs to ensure it fits through and fold over the rings.
Optionally you can add a few more studs to the end of the belt. These studs will need to be on the backside of the belt.
That’s it! Wear your new diy studded belt with jeans, shorts, a skirt, or over a kimono. I hope you love these belts as much as I do.
