It’s almost my favorite time of year again! HALLOWEEN time that is. No Halloween passes by without some new DIY Halloween decorations to welcome our trick-or-treaters. These three witches with a cauldron Halloween decoration is so easy to make and assemble. You’ll need is some fabric, empty bottles, and spray paint. Get my free witch hat pattern below! Finish it up with some garden stakes and a cauldron to complete the witchy gathering on your front lawn.
Materials
- 3 empty bottles (I found that small laundry detergent bottle worked best and looked the most face-like)
- 3 yards of black fabric (pick something that will flow nicely in the wind)
- 3-6 yards of black tulle (1 yard per witch works great but I like the look of the tulle doubled)
- safety pins
- twist ties or wire
- primer spray paint
- green spray paint
- 1 yard or 3 11″x17″ sheets of thick black felt
- witch hat pattern (free download below)
- 3 garden stakes
- witches cauldron
How to Make 3 Witches with a Cauldron DIY Halloween Decorations
1. Make the Witch Hats
These witch hats can be made with a sewing machine or sewn by hand. Not a sewist? Try fabric glue! Download the witch hat sewing pattern below.
Print the pattern at 100%, cut out the paper pattern pieces, and tape them together. Test the sizing of the hat with your witch head. Increase or decrease the print size percentage if needed to fit your witch head.

Cut felt pieces using the witch hat pattern.
Fold the witch hat cone piece in half, pin, and sew a 1/4″ seam along the straight edge.
Flip the cone right-side out and push out the point with a chopstick or similar tool.
Push the cone piece through the center hole of the witch hat brim and pin in place. Sew a 1/4″ seam around the edge.

2. Make the Witch Heads
Spray paint your empty bottles with primer. This step is important to help the green paint stick to the bottle and prevent the paint from chipping. Only one side of the bottle will show through the hood so you only need to paint that side if you prefer.
Allow the primer to dry and spray paint the bottles green. Apply a second coat if needed.
3. Make the Witch Hoods and Capes
Cut 1 yard of black fabric and tulle for each witch.
4. Assemble the Witches
Place the witch head bottle onto a garden stake.
Fold the black fabric and tulle over the bottle to create a “hood.” Use a twist tie or wire to hold the fabric around the mouth of the bottle at the base of the witch’s head.
Place the witch hat onto the witch head and pin in place with a safety pin.
Repeat with the other witches to complete these DIY Halloween decorations.

A large witch cauldron looks great with this DIY Halloween decorations. I piled sticks under the cauldron and added some tattered cheesecloth to make the cauldron appear boiling over. I’ve even placed a pot of mums in the cauldron. The way these witches blow in the wind gives the impression that their floating.

I found this cauldron at Party City. Although you can find cauldrons like this when everywhere this time of year. Check Michael’s, Hobby Lobby, JoAnn Fabrics, or even Home Depot and Mendards. Of course you can always check Amazon. Good luck!
How big is this cauldron?
Great question! This cauldron is about 20″ wide.
The largest plastic ones I have found are only about 18″ across at the opening which isn’t all that large. I found a Xmas tree skirt at Hobby Lobby which is a partial cone. If placed upside down from how you’d normally use it, you can make a very large, bottomless one that’s 2 feet across and 1 foot at the bottom. I bought a silver one which is actually tin, so magnets stick to it. I’m going to fill it with something TBD, and cover it with clear plastic to keep the balls from blowing out and the rain from getting in. I secured the plastic around the edges with magnets holding it in place, then slit pool noodles lengthwise which you can secure the edge with all the way around.
Ooooh, I am very intrigued by this idea. We just got our set up over the weekend and are working on some improvement. Can you send pics?

These were stakes I already had. I recommend looking at Home Depot, Menard’s, or a garden center for stakes. Mine are about 5 feet tall with about a foot pounded into the ground. Send me a picture of yours!

You can use cheap black landscape weed fabric for the bodies and cape. Save some money so you can make more of them

Could you send a pic of the witches with the weed fabric. I have two rolls of it so all I need are the stakes. Has anyone painted faces for the witches?
Hi Lisa – I haven’t seen any pictures of people using landscaping fabric, though I’ve been told several times that they’ve used it. And I’m confident it would work well. :) And yes, I’ve seen some painted faces. I just posted a collection of witches here on Instagram. Send pics of your witches :)
