As part of our family Halloween costume, we put together these quick Scuba Diver costumes to accompany our baby sea turtle.
Our Scuba Diver costumes required just a few materials that you may already have around the house. Here’s what we used to make ours.
Materials
- 2 liter bottle
- electrical tape
- silver duck tape (or duct tape)
- black duck tape
- tubing (we found this in the plumbing aisle of Home Depot)
- small plastic dish (or similar, we used individual applesauce containers)
- 1″ wide flat elastic
- 2 – 12″ x 18″ pieces of craft foam
- scuba mask and snorkel
- black shirt and leggings/pants
How to make a DIY Scuba Diver Costume
To complete the Scuba Diver costumes you’ll need an all black outfit, diving mask, snorkel, oxygen tank, diving gauge, regulator, and flippers.
Diving mask and snorkel
I found this diving mask and snorkel set on sale at Amazon for a reasonable price.
For the flippers
Cut flipper shaped pieces from craft foam. I created a paper template to check sizing before making the final cuts. Attach elastic bands to hold around your ankle and sew in place. For extra credit, stitch or draw lines down the flippers. If you’re going to be walking with the flippers on, add elastic straps to go around the arch of your feet.
For the diving gauge and regulator
Create a drawing of a diving gauge and tape onto the bottom side of the plastic containers. Optionally add a circle of craft foam to the front of the regulator. Completely wrap the container with electric tape. Using a hold punch, create a hole in the sides of the containers big enough to fit the plastic tubing. Slide the tubing into the hole and secure in place with electrical tape. If your tubing is clear like ours, wrap with electrical tape.
For the oxygen tank
Completely wrap the empty 2 liter bottle with silver duck tape. Cut 2 pieces of elastic so you can wear the tank like a backpack. Add one strip of black tape around the tank and over the elastic to hold in place.
Stick the diving gauge and regulator tubes into the top of the bottle and secure in place with electrical tape.
