If you’ve been here before, you probably know that our family loves everything Halloween. We always have the house decked out in cobwebs, bats, pumpkins, ghosts, witches, and more. Along with our Halloween decor, we also go all-out with our DIY Family Halloween Costumes.
My husband and I have been making our own couple’s costumes since 2005. When we expanded to three, this didn’t change. We just started making a family costume alongside our couple’s costume. Twice the work equals twice the fun.
Scuba Diver and Baby Sea Turtle Family Halloween Costume
Year one as a pack of three was an exciting Halloween for us since we got to get our little guy in on the dress-up fun. We happened to be vacationing to a beach house around Halloween that year which made a great backdrop for our baby sea turtle and scuba diver costumes.

Bonus, this baby sea turtle costume can be turned into a stuffed animal using the same pattern. Learn how here.
Animal Family Halloween Costume
Our second group costume was the easiest and most comfortable family Halloween costume we’ve made. Each person’s costume started with a pair of fleece footed pajamas, making this a perfect costume for cool fall weather and outdoor Halloween festivities.

Construction Crew Family Costume
Year three was the year of the construction zone. From a birthday party to summer entertainment to construction toys EVERYWHERE to Halloween. I learned more about construction equipment than I ever thought I would know. This boy wanted to be a vampire for a whole year until he spied my surfing Pinterest one day and saw a kid dressed as a yellow bulldozer. “Mom, I want to be a wrecking ball crane!”

DIY Transformers Costumes
This year was a little more ambitious, but we had extra time since it was mid-pandemic. Our Transformers loving 3-year-old was set on dressing up as Optimus Prime, so mom and dad went as Bumblebee and Whirl.
These costumes were made with Folly Foam, colored Duck Tape, cardboard, and some vinyl cut on a Circut. Some yellow glasses tied it together. Optimus Prime was completely transformable!
DIY Bat Costumes from Hoodies
You can’t beat the classic Halloween character – the bat! These DIY costumes made with hoodies were quick to put together starting with hoodies. The wings are a piece of black fleece cut into the shape of bat wings with topstitched details. Each of the wings were just safety pinned under the arms of the hoodie. The bat ears are made with black and gray fleece.
DIY Jawa Family Costumes
We were on a Star Wars kick during the introduction of The Mandalorian series this year. After auditioning just about every Start Wars character as a Halloween costume possibility, we landed on being a family of Jawas.
I pulled several large pieces of fabric from the stash and dyed it brown. We covered our faces with sheer black fabric (just like the Cheesecloth Ghost Costumes) and all wore glasses with the lenses removed underneath. We tape some battery-powered candles to the glasses frames to create the warm glow of the Jawa eyes. We all wore accessories of leather bags and leather belts. The smallest Jawa got a custom made armor belt made with brown marine vinyl and a Folly Foam Ion Blaster.
DIY Garten of Banban Costumes: Banban, Banbaleena, and Nabnab
Some might call this DIY Garten of Banban Costume an obscure one, but on Halloween night, when someone recognizes you, you know it’s good. Our son wanted to be Nabnab this year so we followed suit with a DIY Banban and Banbaleena costume.
These three Garten of Banban costumes came together easy, all starting with hoodies and sweatpants, making these comfortable and warm for a Minnesota Halloween night.
