Space Birthday Party: Our Son’s First Birthday

A space birthday party theme is easy to achieve with cosmic decorations and fun space-themed finger food. Our space-themed party was for our son’s first birthday complete with a space-themed first birthday smash cake, space birthday decorations, and of course, space-themed food for guests.

Space Birthday Party Decorations

You don’t have to buy premade space party decorations to create an outer space look, you can quickly gather enough supplies to create that space vibe for a better price. My local party store did not have any “spacey” decorations but did have metallic tableware, star-shaped balloons, and plenty of star decorations. I was able to find other items online to complete the space birthday party theme. Find a full list of supplies with links at the bottom of this post.

The space backdrop was one of my favorite parts of the space birthday party setup as it brought the entire look together. This particular backdrop is listed as a wall tapestry and could alternatively be used as a tablecloth, ceiling decor, or photo backdrop. It hung behind our food table with a silver “Happy Birthday” sign in front. I plan to refashion the backdrop into something cool, and the sign will work for future birthday parties.

To keep the space party look at the food table, we used aluminum cake pans as serving trays, wrapped mismatched platters in aluminum foil, and spread glow-in-the-dark stars across the table covered with a plain blue table covering. Silver star garlands and swirls were strung around the house along with shimmery balloons.

Space Birthday Party Favors

Each of the young party guests got party favors to take home with them. I stuck some glow-in-the-dark stickers on plain blue favor bags and added some curled silver ribbon. In the party favor gift bags were glitter star body stickers and a Surprizamal.

Space Birthday Food

The space birthday party food ideas were fun to brainstorm and prepare. Once all the food came together, the space theme was complete. Each dish was paired with a cute space-themed sign with names like “Moon Munchies” for the veggies, “Galactic Goodies” for the candy dish, and “Stellar Salad” for the salad.

We served a veggie and hummus platter (my son’s favorite) complete with star-shaped peppers and moon-shaped cucumbers. I’d like to make a special shout-out to my mom for taking the extra time to cut out and arrange this beautiful veggie platter. 😊

We filled a cake pan with fun-size Milk Way and individual Starburst candies. My husband commented “did you pick a space theme so you could get your two favorite types of candy?” 🤷‍♀️

These fruit skewers are perfect for a kids space birthday party! Just slide some fresh fruit on wooden skewers and call them “Fruit Rockets.” We used green grapes, blueberries, and strawberries. Both kids and adults loved them.

Full disclaimer: We quickly realized that wooden skewers did not go well for our youngest guests and ended up sliding the fruit off the skewers and into cups for them.

Our “Stellar Salad” was a Broccoli Cranberry Cashew Salad (similar recipe here) purchased from our local natural foods grocery store. To bring in the space theme I added a Swiss cheese moon and stars.

We also served hot “Meteor Meatballs” in the crockpot, a meat and cheese tray with Hawaiian Rolls, and “Rocket Fuel” juice boxes.

Space Birthday Cake

For guests, we ordered a 1/4 sheet cake from Lunds & Byerlys. They not only do an awesome job at cake decorating but their cakes also taste fantastic. We went with a marble cake with raspberry filling. Yum!

At the time, our son was not yet eating eggs (due to a reaction), so I made him a special egg-free smash cake complete with yogurt frosting. The smash cake was this Egg-Free Blueberry Cake recipe. Instead of making a sugar-laden frosting, I just smeared Siggi’s Whole-Milk Vanilla Yogurt in between the two cake layers and a thin layer on the outside of the cake. I highly recommend using yogurt in the place of frosting; it’s so thick and spreads on nicely.

Blueberries surrounded the base of the cake as well as a few on top.

The smash cake was topped with a blue glitter number candle, glow-in-dark stars and planets, and sprinkled with silver star-shaped sprinkles.

After his first birthday song and an attempt at blowing out the candle, the birthday boy dug right in!

After a few tastes of the cake he ended up just eating all of the blueberries.

We had so much fun throwing our son’s first birthday party, especially since it was a space-themed party. The whole party went by so quickly, but we had a blast and made some great memories. My favorite part was watching our son dig into his cake but then only eat the blueberries.
