Two of my current favorite things are poinsettias and velvet. This holiday season I put together a new Christmas Poinsettia Wreath that’s simple to make and looks elegant hanging on the front door.
I loved the soft, wispy look of my Halloween Spiderweb Wreath and wanted to transfer the same concept into a holiday wreath. The contrast of the deep red velvet poinsettias and bright white cheesecloth is perfect for the Christmas season.
Poinsettia Wreath Materials
- foam wreath form (Size of your choice, mine is 16in.)
- cheesecloth (I used one 6yd package of bleached cheesecloth.)
- red velvet ribbon (Choose a ribbon that does not fray. I used 2.5in gold backed red velvet wired ribbon.)
- red thread
- small gold jingle bells
- long straight pins
How to Make a Poinsettia Wreath
This poinsettia wreath can be complete in an afternoon and only take a few steps.
Unroll and unfold the cheesecloth. Loosely wrap the cheesecloth around the wreath form.
Tie the ends of the cheesecloth to hold in place. Hide the the knotted ends by tucking into the folds of the cheesecloth. Set wreath form aside.
How to Make Ribbon Poinsettias
For the poinsettia flower petals, I used a method similar to Martha Stewart’s Ribbon Poinsettia Wreath and Sugar Bee Crafts’ Felt Flower Tree Skirt.
Ribbon Poinsettia Tips
- For each flower petal, you can cut one petal and use as a template or just wing it for each petal. I chose to wing it so each petal piece is not exactly identical but very close.
- I found it best to cut each petal individually rather than layering the ribbon pieces and cutting multiple at once. Choose whichever method works best for you.
- I recommend making one flower all the way through to the step of attaching to the wreath form to get a good idea of the whole process.
Each flower for the poinsettia wreath will need 3 petal pieces. This will result in 6 petals for each flower.
Cut three 5″ pieces of ribbon. Fold the cut ribbon in half lengthwise and cut a half petal shape. This will cut off the wired edges. Unfold the petal pieces. They should look similar to the image above.
Each of the 3 petal pieces require 3 folds.Fold all 3 petal pieces at the same time. I used Wonder Clips to hold the fold in each step.
- Fold the petal piece in half with the right-sides facing each other.
- Fold both sides in half again to the outside.
- Fold the entire petal in half.
Thread a needle with red thread and knot the ends. Push your needle and thread through the bottom folds of the petal making sure to catch all folds. Once all 3 petal pieces are threaded, pull tight and your poinsettia flower will take shape. Run a couple more stitches through all the petals for an extra secure hold.
Stitch on 3 jingle bells to the center of each flower. Tie and trim your thread on the back of each flower.
Repeat until you have the desired amount of flowers for your poinsettia wreath.
This wreath has only seven flowers but I think my next wreath will be entirely covered in these red velvet poinsettias! :)
To attach the flowers to the wreath form, push a straight pin through the center of the flower. The pin head should sink into the center of the flower and be hidden from view.
Push the flower with pin into your wreath form. Vary the layout and overlap the flower petals to get the desired look.
Hang this poinsettia wreath on your front door using a wreath hanger or extra piece of ribbon.
I hope you can enjoy making this poinsettia wreath as much as I did. Send me a photo of your project so I can feature it!
