Doorway Spiderweb with Sock Spiders

I’ve tried a doorway spiderweb for past Halloweens but it turned out waaaay cooler this year! A properly spun spiderweb paired with spiders made from foam balls and socks did the trick.

Doorway Spiderweb Materials

• yarn
• tacks or tape

How to make a spiderweb

Begin your doorway spiderweb by crossing straight pieces across the door. Off-centering the middle of the spiderweb gives a cool effect. Doubling the yarn will help thicken the lines. I used tacks to attach the yarn on the sides of our door.

Once all of your straight cross pieces are set, begin the circular weaving. With a long piece of yarn, starting with the outermost circle, tie on with a cow stitch.

Bring the yarn over to the next cross piece and wrap around once. Continue the circular web all the way around to where you started and tie. Repeat the same steps for the inner circles to complete the doorway spiderweb.

Sock Spider Materials

• foam balls in various sizes (2 per spider)
• socks (1 per spider)
• pipe cleaners (8 per spider)
• ball-head straight pins (2 per spider)

Each spider uses two foam balls. Starting with the the larger foam ball, push it into the toe of the sock.

Tip: If your foam balls come wrapped in plastic, leave this on as it makes pushing the ball into the sock much easier.

Add in the smaller foam ball leaving a small space between the two balls. Twist the sock in the middle.

Tip: A second set of hands works well for the next step.

Twist the sock at the end of the small foam ball and pull backwards over both balls. Twist a pipe cleaner like a twist-tie around the center to hold tight. This will also be used to attach the spider to the spiderweb.

Push your pipe cleaners through the sock and into the foam balls

Tip: If you’re having troubles pushing the pipe cleaner into the foam ball, use a straight pin to create a hole by pushing in the pin and twist around a little bit.

Bend the pipe cleaner legs for knees and feet. Add the straight pins for eyes.

My husband named them Mr. & Mrs. Hanes. :)

Attach the spider to the doorway spiderweb with a piper cleaner between the head and body of the spider. Stick the spider feet in-between the double yarn web to hold in place.

I love the way this looks backlit on our front door! I can’t wait for the trick-or-treaters to start rolling in.
