Holiday Sewing Pattern Details
Size
It’s a big one! This large stocking measures in at 18″ long by 11″ wide. That’s big enough for several presents, extra trinkets, and small holiday treats.
Best Fabrics
Non-stretch fabrics are best for this Christmas Stocking Sewing Pattern. I recommend quilting cotton, canvas, denim, upholstery fabric, denim, flannel, or velvet. Medium weight fabrics work great for a either a plain stocking or a stocking with custom details.
Foam Stabilizer
Using a foam stabilizer will give these stockings structure yet still be soft and pliable. This is my favorite foam stabilizer. The foam layer will also highlight an quilting details beautifully.
Using quilt batting will give the stocking some body, but will hang more loosely.

Customize Your Handmade Holiday Stockings
The downloadable PDF Christmas stocking sewing pattern is for the basic, fully-lined stocking with hanging loop. You can customize these handmade holiday stockings in whatever way you can imagine. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Quilt Lines
I like to get creative with quilting details as the foam layer highlights quilt lines beautifully, especially on a shimmery fabric like velvet. Straight line quilting, ruler quilting, or free motion quilting are all great options for these stockings. Try using contrasting thread or heavier-weight thread to highlight those quilted details even more. The texture that quilt lines add to these stockings with the foam stabilizer is an extra bonus.
Patchwork
Have you always wanted to try patchwork sewing? These stockings will look great in any style of patchwork you can dream up. Pull out that scrap bin and start sorting scraps for one-of-a-kind and unique holiday stockings.
Get Scrappy
If you’re like me, you have a bin (or two) of discarded scrap fabric that will work perfect for this project. Combine different types of fabric for a totally random style and design or coordinate your scraps for a unique look.
Upcycle
Sort through your closet to find those unworn garments to create an upcycled textile project. I like to try most of my patterns in denim and the holiday stocking sewing pattern is no exception. Strips of denim and a heavy-weight silver thread and lining from a dress shirt are the perfect combo for a classic look. Adding leather details, back pockets, or metal rivets would take this denim stocking to the next level. Have an old leather coat? Why not try making a set in upcycled leather and line it with something fuzzy or silky?
Embroidery
Customize these Christmas stocking sewing pattern with embroidery. Whether you use an embroidery machine or enjoy hand embroidery, this handmade stocking will work great for making personalized stockings for everyone in the family.
Beading, Jingle Bells, or Buttons
Get even more detailed with your customized stockings by adding shimmery beads, metallic jungle bells, or colorful buttons to your stockings.

Large, Durable Christmas Stocking Pattern
These Christmas stockings are made to last year-to-year. My first handmade Christmas stockings using this same pattern were made in 2017 and have stood the test of time. They’re durable, beautiful, and large enough that we never looked into any other style of Christmas stockings. These stockings will likely become heirlooms that will be passed on to the next generation. My son already loves pulling them out and hanging them on the mantle, waiting to be filled with holiday goodies.
Love Bear Sewing Pattern
The Love Bear is my most popular sewing pattern that’s been made around the globe. The simple teddy bear sewing pattern is a joy to make and gift, or to make with a loved one during the holiday season.
I hope you enjoy making these handmade Christmas stockings using my sewing pattern. If you have made projects using this pattern or any of my other sewing patterns, let me know! I love to see what you make. You can email me or tag @scratchandstitch on social media.
