Spring planting is so close! I crave to browse the aisles of the nursery, smelling the fresh scent of new plants and digging in the dirt. So I filled my need by selecting some miniature plants for a terrarium with terra cotta pots.
My mother-in-law gave me this terrarium several years ago. A quick cleanup made the terrarium look shiny and new, and was soon to be the new home of some plants.
Since fairy gardens are all the rage right now, many nurseries stock miniature plants perfect for those little spaces. And they’re so cute.
Materials
- terrarium
- small terra cotta pots in various sizes, with bases for drainage
- miniature plants (or air plants)
- potting soil
- river rocks
How to make a terrarium with terra cotta pots
First decide how your pots will fit into your terrarium with bases in place. Determine which plants will fit best in each pot by size and height.
Add river rocks to the bottom of your pots to allow water flow. Add potting soil to fill 1/2 of the pot. Remove plant from the container it came in and place into pot. Fill the remaining area with potting soil. Gently press down the soil around the plant.
Place your plants into your sink and sprinkle with water until it drains through. Allow to drip dry for a few minutes. Transfer your pots into the terrarium.
Place your terrarium in a room with bright but not direct light.
Allow the dirt in your pots to dry before watering. Water weekly or biweekly. Depending on how air-tight your terrarium is will determine the watering frequency.
A terrarium is great for your desk! Or a place where you can’t normally have plants due to a feline friend who likes to eat them. :)

I wish I could tell you. I think she probably had it for a long time and it went into the garage sale pile. Search “terrarium house” in Google and you’ll find a ton of similar ones.
