Next time you’re searching through a thrift store or yard sale, keep your eye open for home decor items that can be transformed into Halloween decorations. This little birdhouse decoration quickly became mini Halloween houses with a bit of paint and beads.
When we helped pack up the home that my Grandma and Grandpa resided in for 50 years, we sorted piles for keep, donation, and throw. I came across several things destined to be repurposed. This miniature birdhouse decoration needed to be changed into a tiny haunted Halloween village.
Mini Halloween House Materials Used
- mini house decoration (thrift stores, yard sales, and your grandma’s attic are great places to look)
- acrylic paint (Halloween colors: black, orange, green, purple, yellow, silver, gray, white)
- paintbrushes or foam paint brushes
- pin, paperclip, or wire (for painting mini jack ‘o lantern faces)
- popsicle sticks
- orange beads
- sticks
- miniature Halloween buttons
- hot glue + glue gun
The first step was giving the mini houses a couple of coats of black paint. This included covering the “this place is for the birds” quote.
Jack-O’-Lantern Totem
This glowing jack-o’-lantern totem will catch the eye of trick-or-treaters passing by.
I’m obsessed with these thrift store decorations turned Halloween decoration with black paint.
After the paint dried, I added some Halloween colors to the houses with orange, green, purple, and silver paint using foam brushes. Each house got a unique style to look well-worn.
I filled the holes with bright yellow paint to give the appearance that the haunted house lights are on.
One of the houses was missing its roof so I glued some broken popsicle sticks onto the top and painted them black.
I created mini jack-o’-lantern pumpkins by painting faces onto orange wooden beads and gluing small sticks into the holes. The faces were painted on with black paint and a sewing pin.
The last bit of flair was to attach some Halloween theme buttons and the miniature jack ‘o lanterns with hot glue.
I debated for a long time on whether or not to repaint a new quote onto the decoration but couldn’t decide on one. If you have an idea, leave it in the comments below.
This easy, repurposed shelf decoration is a great addition to my Halloween decoration collection.
