His & Her Mirror Costume

Mirror mirror on the…costume? In addition to our family Halloween costume, we created matching his and her mirror costumes. These were our best couple costumes. Ever.

I feel like a pretty lucky girl to say that my husband enjoys Halloween as much as I do. We’ve each made our DIY couples Halloween costumes every year for the past 14 Halloweens. He always makes his, and I make mine.

We’ve dressed up as Jack and Sally, fairy and giant, birds, queen bee and beekeeper, creepy ghosts, dragon and wizard, and more. The year our son was born, we made DIY scuba diver costumes and added a baby sea turtle to our clan. Our most recent couple’s mirror costume brought home our first costume contest win against 3000 other people at the historic Armory in Minneapolis.

Here’s how we made our best couple’s costumes.

DIY Couples Costume

You will make a statement with a DIY mirror costume. Each of the his and her styles are simple to make, but each takes some time and patience to complete. Both of the mirror costumes take on a unique style that literally reflects your surroundings. They’re perfect for a night club setting, which is where we wore ours.

His Mirror Costume

Materials & Supplies

• chrome vinyl adhesive
• thick card stock paper
• Gorilla Heavy Duty Double-Sided Tape
• black clothing

His DIY mirror costume was made using chrome vinyl adhesive paper, thick cardstock, double-sided tape, and black clothing.

First, the chrome vinyl adhesive paper was stuck onto a thick cardstock paper to give it more strength. It was then cut into random shapes. Each of the mirrored pieces were taped with double-sided tape onto a black hat, black t-shirt, black shorts, and shoes. The Gorilla double-sided tape was surprisingly durable for a whole night of dancing.

His DIY mirror costume reflected all the lights of the night.

Her Mirror Costume

Her DIY mirror cat costume was made using triangle acrylic sew-on mirrors individually sewn onto a black skater dress. The same triangle mirrors were attached to a pair of black thrifted boots and some black elastic bands for bracelets. The costume came together with a pair of chrome sunglasses, DIY cat ears, and fishnet accessories.

Materials & Supplies

• black dress and boots
• sew-on triangle acrylic mirrors
• black thread and needle
• Gorilla Heavy Duty Double-Sided Tape
• plastic craft mirror
• black craft foam
• 2 black hair clips or barrettes
• 1″ black elastic
• fishnet fingerless gloves
• black tights

DIY Mirror Cat Ears

I used this same easy DIY ears method using barrettes for my unicorn BFF costume. This is an awesome way to wear ears without a headband (perfect if you’re also wearing sunglasses). They’re lightweight and will stay standing straight up for hours of wear.

Cut two pieces of black felt into a cat ear-shaped triangles. Hand-stitch the felt triangles onto the top of the barrettes. Cut two pieces of mirror paper into slightly smaller triangles. Attach the mirror triangles onto the felt ears using double-sided tape or glue. Clip into your hair.

DIY Mirror Dress

I found this Free People black lace dress on the clearance rack. The slight stretch and lace overlay is perfect for attaching the mirrors.

Starting at the top, center of the dress, I hand sewed each of the triangle mirrors onto the dress, one at a time. I used some masking tape to create a straight line to follow. After the whole bodice was covered in mirrors, I began spreading out the mirrors down the skirt. The same pattern was repeated on the backside of the dress.

DIY Mirror Boots

Onto a thrifted pair of Steve Madden boots, I attached the same sew-on triangle mirrors using Gorilla double-sided tape. I started at the toes and worked my way up the leg of the boots. This tape holds so well that these boots have lasted through several dance nights, with only a few mirrors lost. I have some mirrors leftover that can easily replace the lost ones.

The His & Her DIY Mirror Costumes have by-far been the best costumes we’ve made. We attended a Rezz concert at the historic Armory in downtown Minneapolis wearing these costumes.

We got so many comments on the way the mirrors reflected all the lights. During the concert, we were approached by one of the people judging costumes and were told that we won the GRAND PRIZE of meeting Rezz after the show. Winners!!
